Let's Be Real Mamas - Supporting the belly

I am in my 34th week of pregnancy & let me tell you - I need all the support I can get all the time.

Join me in going over some of my favourite support tactics.

Number one - My Pregnancy pillow

The pillow that has my back (& my bump). As soon as my belly started to grow and my sleep became more elusive, I decided to give one a try. Let me tell you; it was one of the best decisions I've made during my pregnancy.

Here are all the reasons I stand by my pregnancy pillow:

Comfort & Support: The 'C' or 'U' shaped pillows are my personal favorites. They wrap around your body, supporting both your back and your bump. This support is a game-changer for a good night's sleep, which becomes increasingly elusive as the months go by. No more tossing and turning, trying to find the right position.

Versatility: Not just for sleeping, though they certainly shine in that department. I found them equally useful during daytime activities, whether it's reading, watching TV, or simply lounging on the couch. They can be positioned in various ways to accommodate your changing needs, making them an essential part of your pregnancy toolkit.

Pain Relief: Pregnancy can come with its fair share of aches and pains. As the baby grows, the strain on your back, hips, and even your legs can be quite uncomfortable. Pregnancy support pillows help alleviate these discomforts by providing strategic support, thus promoting better posture and reducing the strain on your body. For someone like me who's been dealing with lower back pain, this has been a game-changer.

Emotional Boost: Pregnancy support pillows offer more than just physical relief. They provide a sense of emotional comfort and security. As an expecting mother, I often find myself hugging the pillow, finding solace in its presence. It's like a silent companion, always there to support me – both physically and emotionally.

Overall, a must have for every expecting mother. I have attached my go to pregnancy pillow

Number two - Creams & Oils

I started first getting stretch marks on my stomach at the beginning of my third trimester. I was upset & felt insecure that my body is changing but I had to realize, my body is making the change because I am growing a whole ass human. So, instead of harping on the negative I looked into a few different stretch mark creams & oil that would help nourish my growing body.

Here are some of the treatments I'm using & why I recommend them:

Palmer's Cocoa Butter Formula Complete Stretch Mark Care Kit - https://amzn.to/3Qs1vaF

Tummy Butter for Stretch Marks: This thick, creamy formula is designed to be applied over your growing belly and any other areas prone to stretch marks. It absorbs well and leaves your skin feeling soft and supple. I've found it particularly effective in preventing and reducing stretch marks on my abdomen.

Massage Lotion for Stretch Marks: This lotion is perfect for everyday use. It's lighter in texture compared to the tummy butter, making it ideal for quickly applying to other parts of your body where stretch marks might develop, such as the thighs and breasts. I love that it's suitable for daily use, and it keeps my skin hydrated and healthy.

Skin Therapy Oil: This multipurpose oil is a real gem. Not only does it target existing stretch marks, but it also helps improve the overall tone and texture of your skin. I've been using it not just on my belly but on my face and body too. It's lightweight and absorbs easily, making it a versatile addition to your skincare routine.

Personally I was using Jojoba oil before pregnancy to help improve my skin during the cold Canadian winters, so I figured of course I will continue to use it for the reasons below!

All-Natural and Safe: Jojoba oil is a pure, natural product extracted from the seeds of the jojoba plant. It contains no harmful chemicals or additives, making it a safe choice for both you and your baby. This was a big selling point for me, knowing I was using something gentle on my skin.

Deep Moisturization: During pregnancy, our skin can become dry, itchy, and prone to stretching. Jojoba oil is deeply hydrating and easily absorbed, which has been a lifesaver for me. I've applied it to my belly, hips, breasts, and thighs to keep my skin well-hydrated and supple. The relief from itching and tightness is immediate.

Versatile and Affordable: Jojoba oil is readily available and budget-friendly. You can find it in most health food stores or online, and a little goes a long way. I appreciate that it doesn't break the bank while offering such excellent benefits.

Number Three: Exercises & Stretching

Being healthy is one thing, being active is a wholeeee other. Yes they go hand & hand but these are some of the activities I am doing to help support my belly. Please consult your healthcare provider if you have any questions about certain exercises.

Pelvic Tilt:

  • Stand with your back against a wall or use a stable surface for support.

  • Tighten your abdominal muscles and tilt your pelvis backward, pushing your lower back into the wall or surface.

  • Hold for a few seconds, then release. Repeat 10-15 times.

Wall Squats:

  • Stand with your back against a wall and your feet shoulder-width apart.

  • Slowly slide down the wall into a squat position, keeping your knees aligned with your ankles.

Cat-Cow Stretch:

  • Get on your hands and knees, with your wrists under your shoulders and your knees under your hips.

  • Arch your back (cat position), and then round it (cow position).

  • This stretch can help relieve back pain and promote flexibility in the spine.

Swimming:

  • Water provides buoyancy and supports your body, making swimming a great low-impact exercise during pregnancy.
